Canon in D Major, 2012, acrylic on canvas, 27″ x 18″
This piece is a salute to one of my favorite contemporary artists; Leonid Afremov. He is a Russian–Israeli modern impressionistic artist who works with a palette knife and bright colored oil paints. His paintings of musicians are especially impressive to me, you can almost feel the vibrations of the music through his unique strokes and use of color. Whether it is the intensity of jazz or the elegance of a ballroom dance, he somehow captures the essence of the music with the paint. So my intention with this piece was to portray the music coming from the violin and show how it envelopes the musician, and with tribute to Afremov…I did the whole thing with a palette knife 🙂
